Facing severe overcrowding, outdated spaces and high operating costs in their existing building, the District of North Vancouver Council initiated an expansion and redevelopment program. The project was viewed as an opportunity to renew not just the facility, but also the manner in which Council served the public. By reorganizing its departments, public spaces and staff facilities, the Council aimed to create a new environment of openness and availability. We transformed the existing 1950’s era building by orienting the complex around a light-filled 3-story atrium, emphasizing its accessibility and public character. We developed a contemporary and inviting palette of materials such as naturally finished concrete, clear glass, anodized aluminum, steel and wood and detailed the materials to provide a level of elegance appropriate for an important public facility.
