The Bay Bridge East Span across San Francisco Bay from Treasure Island to Oakland welcomes bicyclists and pedestrians on the bridge for the first time, giving them an unforgettable two miles of magnificent views and a new regional perspective. We worked in collaboration with PWP Landscape Architects on Gateway Park, the launch point for the journey.

Early in the process, the Bay Bridge design team identified a unique opportunity to create a new world-class park that provides a memorable gateway to Oakland and an unprecedented way to experience the Bay and the Bay Bridge East Span. The Gateway Park Working Group, a consortium of nine public agencies, was formed to explore the possibilities of a creating a place for local residents, commuters, businesses, international travelers, environmentalists, boaters, cyclists and others. Selected to lead the urban design and community outreach for this consortium, we partnered with the community to plan a Gateway Park that benefits the health, economic vitality and quality of life of everyone in the region. Our award-winning planning process was used to bring this forgotten piece of waterfront at the foot of the bridge to the attention of local Oakland residents, Bay Trail and Water Trail users, bicyclists and boaters, truckers and shipping businesses. The process began in media silence, but through our efforts, quickly moved to rooms full of participants, busy online chatter and front page press heralding a planning success.
