The Nancy N. and J. C. Lewis Cancer and Research Pavilion serves as the focus of an overall cancer program that has at its foundation the development of organ site teams dedicated to providing best practice approaches throughout the continuum of care beginning with education and prevention through follow-up and end-of-life care. The 3-story, 50,000 square foot free-standing building is a portion of the St. Joseph's/Candler Medical Office Park.

In keeping with the pavilion concept, the facility includes a butterfly garden as a signature feature. The butterfly becomes the metaphor for the healing nature of the garden. The campus plan recalls the Savannah squares with its defined "wards" that preserve and protect the integrity of the garden (butterfly). The building/program components act as the protective wards (chrysalis), which define and connect the gardens as outdoor rooms. In a prescribed yet natural manner, the transformation of the site unfolds over time into a series of connected gardens.
