This project was designed for an invited design competition that was initiated by the Qatar Ministry of Agriculture. The competition requested the proposal for a new broadcast facility for the state operated television and radio networks. The facility has 6,850 square meters of programmed area that includes television studios, radio studios, an international news center, administrative area, cafeteria, multi-purpose room and covered parking for 500 cars.
The project started by synthesizing the provided program with findings from a physical and ephemeral investigation of cultural traditions of the region. The facility acts as a bridge between the principals of Islamic design traditions and the 21st century. The design of the broadcasting services complex is based on a modern interpretation of traditional Islamic Architecture and Urbanism. At the heart of the traditional Islamic city was the bazaar, a space composed of covered markets arranged along a central spine.
This design reinterprets this tradition by organizing the program elements along a linear spine to produce an "electronic bazaar" consisting of broadcast video projection screens.
