We are working with Rush University Medical Center to plan and design their Campus Transformation Project on the west side of Chicago. The project includes a 806,000 square foot, state-of-the-art hospital building, the largest orthopedics care facility of its kind in the Midwest and a centralized power plant/parking garage. The existing Atrium Building is slated for intensive renovations upon the completion of the new construction. The hospital design is crowned by a butterfly-shaped bed tower and incorporates 304 acute and critical care beds, 72 neonatal intensive care beds and 10 labor and delivery beds. The emergency department contains the Center for Advance Emergency Response that gives Rush a greater level of preparedness in the event of large scale disasters. The project features rooftop gardens as well as technologies that reduce waste and conserve energy.

A key component of the hospital is the interventional platform design. Three floors are exclusively devoted to surgery, imaging and specialty procedures. A collaborative and a multi-disciplinary approach for specialists doing similar procedures is fostered by the adjacency of the facilities and equipment. The co-location of these key services also minimizes the need for patients and their families to travel to various locations within the medical center. This innovative concept is important to Rush’s goal of reorienting its facilities and campus around the patient.
