Founded in 1917, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music plays a prominent role in music education as the only conservatory of music in the western United States. Having outgrown its existing facility that was home to the conservatory since 1956, we were charged with developing a design for the its new building located in San Francisco's Civic Center, which is the city's cultural heart and home to the San Francisco Symphony, Opera and Ballet.

The plan for the new building included the renovation of the historic 50 Oak Street façade and a new addition to the west side. In addition to the requisite educational spaces, classrooms, practice rooms and faculty studios, the new facility includes a music library, a 450-seat concert hall and recital halls seating 140 and 100. The new building, with its historic façade and contemporary addition, serves as a metaphor for the conservatory's vision to preserve the music of the past while exploring the boundaries of new music.
