An 83 acre cultural landscape of national significance on Staten Island, the Snug Harbor campus needed a plan to organize and enhance its collection of historic buildings and landscapes. Working with landscape architect Tom Balsley Associates, we developed a comprehensive land use plan and next round improvements plan for Snug Harbor. We researched and documented the natural resources, landscape, historic buildings, utilities, site circulation, and visitor amenities, and created proposals for new uses and the rehabilitation of historic structures and landscape areas. We developed a coordinated plan for common areas and identified potential rehabilitations of buildings and landscape to further the mission of the Cultural Center. Our study developed a rigorous set of guiding principles for urban design and landscape recommendations that include identification and preservation of the Historic District’s character-defining features, consistency with the guidelines specified in the Secretary of the Interiors Standards for rehabilitation of landscapes and buildings, and an integrated design approach that links buildings and landscape.
