The new diagnostic imaging department at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario is a one-story, 27,000 square foot facility that consolidates six previously independent modalities into a single imaging center.

Located primarily below grade, the department has minimal access to natural light and views. The design concept blurs the line between nature and nurture, giving everyone who experiences the space a sense that nature surrounds them at all times. A spa-like environment was created with materials such as topiary trees set into a bed of river rock, wood, stone, glass etched with tree imagery, landscaped murals and back-lit ceiling images. The lighting design throughout the project is primarily indirect and is based on the lighting levels and color rendition of natural daylight.

A straightforward floor plan promotes intuitive wayfinding and a clear division between public and private functions. Despite strict budgetary constraints, the new facility improves efficiency and amenities for staff and accommodates state-of-the-art imaging technologies. The new diagnostic imaging department enables St. Joseph’s Healthcare to continue their commitment to providing superior care and making a difference in healthcare delivery in Ontario for generations to come.
