The University of Western Ontario Physics and Astronomy building redevelopment project is a renovation of a 1920s-era Gothic building to support new research and teaching facilities. The project focuses on the conversion of an under-used central courtyard space into a dynamic new focal point for the physics and astronomy departments. This new indoor commons provides large- and small-scale group study and gathering spaces at all levels of the building and creates a highly visible space that reinforces a strong sense of community and a new identity for the departments.
The renovated building houses offices, university and departmental classrooms, physics teaching laboratories and research facilities for physics and astronomy departmental areas of focus including nanotechnology, magnetic resonance and meteors and materials research. In order to encourage interaction among researchers, gathering and collaboration spaces are located in strategic locations throughout the building.
The project is targeting LEED certification for its use of natural lighting and the extensive reuse of existing building components. Construction is phased, allowing the building to remain occupied and functional through the entire process.
