Willets Point is a 62-acre brownfield site currently housing auto-body shops and other light-industrial uses. It sits immediately adjacent to the new Citifield Stadium in Queens, New York. We were chosen by the New York City Economic Development Corporation to help develop a vision for a City-sponsored Redevelopment Plan for the site. With its proximity to major highways, the thriving neighborhoods of downtown Flushing and Corona, Citifield Stadium, the USTA Tennis Center, the Flushing Bay waterfront and Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the area is poised for transformation into a dynamic new mixed-use neighborhood for the city.
Through a series of intensive design charrettes, we developed a plan based on a hotel and convention center program for the site. The team created multiple design options that included space for retail, housing, office, a hotel and convention center, open space, community and cultural facility space and a school. More detailed open space and massing guidelines were created for the preferred development plan option. The resulting plan has enabled the city to move forward in guiding the development of this crucial site.
